Projects

 

All our projects will allow students to explore real world issues that interest them and affect their community. With the help of teachers and industry partners, students will develop multimedia presentations to present their findings in exhibitions. These exhibitions will demonstrate the students’ understanding of content, as well as their proficiency in academic, technical and 21st Century Skills.

 

At Freestyle, you will not only strengthen the necessary writing, speaking, and research skills you will need in college, but learn critical communication skills that will help you express your ideas in exciting and original ways. Your portfolio of work will allow you to present yourself in a unique manner to admissions officers, employers, and/or clients. By the end of two years at Freestyle, your portfolio will have examples that will set you apart with but not limited to the following:

Junior Project 1: Self-Portrait
"Who am I?"

The purpose of this integrated Self-Portrait Project is begin to learn communication techniques and skills to explore and answer the question of "Who am I?" in various mediums using a variety of modern professional equipment and applications such as Mac OS, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Dreamweaver, Apple Garageband, Apple Final Cut Pro, and Google Apps. How well can you visually tell a structured story?

Junior Project 3: Documentary
"How do you authentically portray the untold stories of your community?"

For the Junior Documentary Project, all Junior Freestyle students locate an intriguing location and search within for compelling stories to answer the question "How do you authentically portray the untold stories of your community?". All students gather primary and secondary research sources to develop an informed angle on a chosen documentary research topic which serves as the basis for a research paper, book, film, and website. This unit emphasizes sound research, "truth" in storytelling as well as argumentative structure necessary for effective documentary storytelling.

"How can I use unconventional forms to express myself?"

For the Junior Experimental Project, all Junior Freestyle students will develop their abstract thinking and communication skills to answer the question "How can I use unconventional forms to express myself?" in poetry, music, art, film, and web production. This unit emphasizes creative and strategic risk-taking in communicating social or political themes.

Senior Project 8: Explorations
"What is Thought?"

For the Senior Explorations Project, all Senior Freestyle students will showcase a body of skills and techniques learned while at Freestyle to answer the question "What is Thought?" in poetry, music, art, film, and web production as an experimental culminating project. This unit emphasizes expression of mood and tone of subliminal, intuitive thoughts and emotions based on written prompts. Students will also study satire and apply their skills toward a social, political or cultural criticism to encourage social and civic responsibility.

What's new? You will learn about synthesizing narrative and research material, interview techniques, research skills, and documentary analysis.

In Design (for all students), you will use different kinds of art mediums, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign to

  • Respond automatically through various fine art mediums to a series of psychological prompts and manipulate them digitally
  • Produce a 20 page published collection of digitally manipulated art integrated with selected automatic writing
  • Study political cartoon, caricature, satirical use of form, ironic documentary photography of various humor models to create a humorous poster
  • Analyze comic artists by identifying and explaining how they use various types of visual humor to communicate their purpose and make the audience laugh
